How to play Landfall
Landfall is a free geography game in your browser: a place is named, you find it on a globe of the Earth and tap where you think it is.

Each round names a city, a capital or a landmark, such as Warsaw, Poland. The globe shows the Earth from space, with no names on it. Drag to spin it, scroll or pinch to zoom, then tap to drop your pin and tap it again (or press Enter) to confirm.
The answer then appears with the distance between your pin and the place, and the points you scored.
Scoring
A round is worth up to 100 points, depending on the distance between your pin and the place: the closer, the more points.

points = 100 × e−3.5 × distance / 16,250 km
Right country, right continent. A pin inside the right country lifts the round to at least 25 points, more the closer it is. A pin on land in the right continent does the same from 10 points. This boost stops at 80 points: above that, only the distance counts.
Difficulty. Places come in three levels, which multiply the points of the round. The rounds get harder as the game goes on.

Game modes
Daily challenge
The same 10 places for everyone, every day: 4 easy, 2 medium and 4 hard. You get one attempt, and a new challenge starts at midnight in your own time zone. The server checks your score and ranks you on the day's leaderboard. Your shared result shows your points round by round, never the places.
Ranked 1v1
Join the queue to face a player close to your rating. You both get the same 10 places at the same time. A round lasts 20 seconds at most, and once your opponent has answered you have 10 seconds left. The higher total wins; equal totals are a draw.
Your rating (Glicko-2, starting at 1500) moves after every game. After 5 placement games you join a division, from Mini Trees up to Monster Mashed Potatoes, and the season leaderboard.
Normal game
8 easy, 4 medium and 8 hard places, as many games as you like. A game in progress is saved in your browser and can be resumed later, and your stats (games, best and average score) stay on your device.
Learning mode
The same places and scoring, to learn the map: after each answer the globe shows the borders, the capitals and the names and flags of the countries, and waits for you before the next round. These games stay out of your stats.
Challenge a friend
Open a duel and send the link. You both get the same 10 places and play each round at the same time: once one of you has answered, the other has 20 seconds left. At the end, a rematch is one click away.
FAQ
Is Landfall free?
Yes. Every mode is free to play, with no paywall and no ads.
Do I need an account?
Not for the normal game, the learning mode or a duel with a friend. The daily challenge and ranked mode are played with a Discord login: Landfall only asks Discord who you are (the identify permission), never for your email address or your servers.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, in the browser of a phone, a tablet or a computer, with nothing to install. Drag to spin the globe and pinch to zoom.
Where do the globe images come from?
The globe shows NASA Blue Marble imagery (public domain). When you zoom in, it switches to Sentinel-2 cloudless by EOX (CC BY 4.0).
How many places are there?
More than 2,400 cities, capitals and landmarks all over the world, sorted into three levels of difficulty.
